No Kill Louisville's Bid for LMAS Adoptions
No Kill Louisville's Bid for LMAS Adoptions
No Kill Louisville was the only agency to answer the City of Louisville's Request for Proposal (RFP) to handle adoptions at Louisville Metro Animal Services. However, on Monday, June 27, the mayor announced the administration would not accept the bid and instead will go back to finding a new director.
The mayor cited the fact that NKL was founded a year ago; that NKL was an all-volunteer group with no experience in running a shelter; and that our proposal was over budget. Yes, we were founded a year ago but have made positive strides at and for the shelter from working to find fosters to paying for the medical needs of pets at the shelter. We are called almost on a daily basis to help at LMAS. Yes, we are an all-volunteer group that needs to shift to handling employees, but our proposal addresses that issue. I'd also like to point out that Mayor Greg Fischer has no experience being a mayor and has not held political office in the past. However, he faults NKL for the same reason. In addition, our proposal was under budget for what the city had set aside for the shelter.

This is the same administration who showed up at No Kill Louisville events before the election asking for our support and who promised a No Kill community. Despite the lack of communication regarding this bid, we will continue to help pets in any way the city allows us to help. In addition, No Kill Louisville's Board of Directors is now looking into the "next step" which includes giving serious consideration to building our own open admissions, No Kill shelter. As we work on a plan for creating a No Kill community, we will keep you, the pet lovers of Louisville, updated.
