Volunteer Opportunities with Local Rescues and Shelters

Animal Care Society (ACS) - Located at 12207 Wesport Road, this No Kill shelter desperately needs volunteers. Click here for the one page volunteer application.

Much of our daily work (keeping cages/kennels/yards clean; assisting with feedings, walking/rotating dogs; doing laundry; washing dishes, etc.) is done by volunteers. You can help by giving your love and a few hours each week. No experience is necessary. Volunteers must be a mature 16 or 17 years of age or older (and be willing to work hard and get dirty). Volunteers working for community service or school service hours must be willing to work a minimum of 40 hours.

Volunteer orientations are generally conducted at the shelter on Saturday mornings. During your orientation, you will work with a seasoned volunteer. Once you have submitted an application to volunteer, please call the shelter at (502) 426-6303 and talk to Bunny about scheduling a Saturday morning or "shadowing" an experienced volunteer during a week day.

Bluegrass Shih Tzu Rescue (BGSTR) - needs gentle foster homes for victims of puppymills, backyard breeders, abuse, owner surrenders, and Shih Tzu that have been picked up as strays.

BGSTR is headquartered in Lexington KY and serves KY/TN to rescue this breed. Please visit or call Sherri Marcoski at (502) 225-0807 for more information. You can also reach Sherri at [email protected]

Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) - The Kentucky Humane Society relies on the generosity of our wonderful volunteers. From canine coaches to foster care parents to volunteers who help behind the scenes, we couldn’t do it without you!

There are several ways to get involved, ranging from several hours weekly to a few times a year and everything in between. For more details, check out the volunteer page on the KHS website.

Humane Society of Oldham County (HSOC) - The Humane Society of Oldham County couldn't do the work we do without volunteers, and we'd love to have you join us as we make local residents aware of the importance of spay/neuter and giving every pet a loving forever home. While we have many volunteer opportunities, our most immediate needs are for folks who want to learn TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) and foster parents. As we have no shelter accommodations, we desperately need foster homes for cats and dogs, including those OC Animal Control refers to use and our Camp Canine graduates. For more information about these programs or others where you might fit perfectly, visit our website at, call (502) 222-7537 or email [email protected]

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) - There are many, many great opportunities to volunteer at LMAS. You can volunteer at the Newburg location called Animal House or the 3705 Manslick location by greeting adopters and cleaning cages or kennels or walking dogs. You can also help out at the front desk, adoption events, with general animal care and more. There is also a need for volunteers to work offsite adoptions at PetSmart located on S. Hurstbourne Road. We have a special need for both dog handlers and people to help with the cat adoption room, so please ask us about the PetSmart adoptions program is this interests you.

All volunteers must first attend a volunteer orientation and fill out required paperwork before any volunteer service can be performed. Please call the volunteer coordinator at 574-5556 to register or ask questions.

Shamrock Greyhound Placement ( needs short and long term foster homes for retired racing greyhounds, who come to us from the racing industry, owner surrenders and shelters.

Shamrock Greyhounds is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for retired racing Greyhounds. Based in Shelbyville, KY, placement reps service the area of Louisville, Lexington, Southern Indiana, and Northern Kentucky. Placements are limited to homes within a 100 mile radius of Louisville, Ky.

For information about fostering, contact Jean Varble at 502-608-4254 or [email protected]

Boston Terrier Rescue ( needs foster homes in the Greater Louisville area. We are primarily a Boston Terrier rescue, but we do take in others. Many of our dogs come from KY but we have no foster homes in the area, so we must move them to out-of-state fosters. We have an excellent success rate with our adoptions. Our Petfinder site is always up-to-date. Every time we have a foster in the Louisville area, there is quite a bit of interest. You can contact Lark Thompson, the KY Regional Coordinator for Boston Terrier Rescue of East Tennessee, at [email protected] or 502-243-2218.

More to come!

We will have more details on different agencies and ways you can help in the Louisville area including details on how to get started. Also check our immediate needs page regularly for other ways you can help our area's homeless pets.
